Somewhere in the 1950s the 'Beeb' did a documentary on 1066, specifically whether King Harold's army could have marched the 200 miles to Hastings in 10 days carrying all their gear and equipment. In addition to helmets, chain mail, weapons and camping equipment etc., history professors replicated the diet of the time (including mead).
Members of Surrey Walking Club (of which my Dad was a member) were recruited for the "army"; unfortunately the little guy in the photo is not me - he was found somewhere on route.
And now you know the rest of the story!
